“I am not greedy! It’s just there’s so much good food over by the bridge since the rain.”
“Expecting to get there and back in ten minutes! Who do you think you are, anyway, the Wainscott weasel?”
“Did I say that? Though, if you want to know the truth, I bet I could get an osprey nest off a telephone pole, if I had to.”
“When snapping turtles fly!”
Bagley sat bolt upright, wondering if he’d heard right. He’d automatically assumed the muskrat was referring to his father. Could it be they’d actually been talking about him?
As the muskrats drifted out of earshot, Bagley leaned back on the tuft again. It wasn’t so bad, really, sitting out here watching the tail end of the sunset without being skyscared. As the last purplish glow died in the west, a cool sea breeze swept over the dunes and across the potato field and touched his face, bringing back Bridget’s kiss. Their first and farewell kiss. But he refused to feel sorry for himself any more. For, in a way, that kiss was sort of like the firefly. Brief as the magical glow had been, it had shone on him—right on him.
Maybe this wasn’t much. But it was enough to light Bagley’s way home in the dark.
